If you find it challenging to establish a connection with your clients, don't worry, it's not necessarily due to anything you're doing wrong.
There are times when clients may feel camera shy, so it's important to give them the space to warm up. Here's a helpful tip for fellow photographers: consider parking a few minutes away from the session location, if feasible. These 5-10 minutes can truly make a difference! It provides an opportunity to build rapport with your clients and allow them to feel at ease.
This is particularly crucial when working with children. I've observed that kids often take the longest to feel comfortable. If you're struggling to engage the little ones, try playing a game with them. Lately, I've been incorporating more water sessions, which has been great. I encourage the kids to splash water on me and each other (with parents' consent, of course!). This playful interaction brings genuine smiles and laughter. You can also have them dance or act silly, fostering a friendly bond by the end of the session.
The goal is to ensure your clients feel at ease and confident during the session. Always have clients complete a questionnaire when booking a session. This simple step allows you to learn more about the individuals you'll be photographing. Take the time to review the questionnaire before the session as it can help you 'break the ice.' Trust me, the effort is worthwhile. Your clients will feel more comfortable and appreciate the effort you put into getting to know them. Plus, you might even make some new friends! Always strive to exceed expectations!
